The history of ATLANTIC Hotels

1990 - The first project of the present-day ATLANTIC Hotels group

The development of the present-day ATLANTIC Hotels group started in the Bremen district of Vegesack in 1990. The investors Joachim J. Linnemann and Kurt Zech had business premises erected there in which a hotel was integrated, among others.

1992 – Opening of ATLANTIC Hotel Vegesack

Hotel VegesackATLANTIC Hotel Vegesack, which was inaugurated in 1992, has 86 rooms, a breakfast area with terrace as well as 4 seminar rooms for up to 60 persons. It is operated as a bed and breakfast hotel. Another restaurant is found in the office building.

1996 – Opening of ATLANTIC Hotel Airport

Not least due to the successful development of the hotel in Vegesack, the decision was taken to open another hotel in 1996, directly opposite Bremen Airport. ATLANTIC Hotel Airport is integrated in the Airport Center and has 112 rooms. Initially, the hotel was also operated as a bed and breakfast hotel. Then, however, it was expanded to include conference capacities for up to 250 persons, as well as BLIXX  restaurant on the 8th floor, offering a view across the airport apron that also extends across Bremen City.

2000 – expo project UNIversum inspired a new construction at the University of Bremen

Within the framework of the UNIversum expo project (Expo 2000 in Hanover), the UNIVERSUM building complex was constructed directly on the outskirts of Bremen Stadtwald (city forest) on the campus of the University of Bremen. The ensemble, consisting of the Science Center, Conference Center and hotel are closely linked with one another as regards the concept. Being able to offer overnight stays, conferences and the accompanying programme within short distances, as well as the fact that the location is directly adjacent to the Technology Park, are only two secrets of ATLANTIC Hotel Universum’s success. The hotel, with 150 double rooms and studios in a design-oriented ambience, as well as CAMPUS restaurant and capacity for events that offer space for up to 500 persons, has expanded the Bremen hotel landscape to include yet another facet: temporary living in rooms that are consciously designed in a clear and linear manner, with a functional concept.

With the establishment of key functions, the foundation for the development of the ATLANTIC Hotels group was also laid with ATLANTIC Hotel Universum. What is more, the Contract World Award and the RedDot-awarded design of the hotel constituted the foundation for the interior design of the subsequent hotels.

2005 – opening of ATLANTIC Hotel Galopprennbahn

In 2005, ATLANTIC Hotel Galopprennbahn in the Vahr district, at the Bremen racecourse. The hotel has 121 double rooms, studios and suites as well as DERBY restaurant. It offers the possibility to host events for up to 1,000 persons on one level, thanks to the horse racecourse stand construction which is directly connected to the hotel. The ATLANTIC Hotel Universum design concept has been developed further and also realised at the horse racecourse. Here, the concept of “Conference, Overnight Stays and Framework Programme in One Areal” is also lived.

The “Central Services” of the ATLANTIC Hotels group have been extended to include one central personnel bookkeeping and EDP.

2008 – Opening of ATLANTIC Sail City directly along the Weser Dyke in Bremerhaven

At the beginning of 2008, with ATLANTIC Hotel Sail City in Bremerhaven, the most media-effective hotel of the still young hotel cooperation was opened. The architecture of the building is reminiscent of a billowing sail and ideally reflects the location directly along the Weser dyke. Also the interior design - once again a further development of the concept of the two already existing design-oriented hotels - picks up on this theme once more. 120 rooms on 8 floors of the building, which boasts a total of 19 floors, offer a clear view toward the Outer Weser. The crowning glory is the Captain’s Lounge on the 19th floor, which offers a panoramic view across the Outer Weser right up to the North Sea and across the entire surrounding area of Bremerhaven. A viewing platform at an altitude of 86 metres as well as the Conference Center Bremen, which is directly connected to the hotel and offers capacity for a total of up to 550 persons, rounds off the unique offer in Bremerhaven.

2010 – The year of new openings

With 3 new hotel openings in the first half of the year, as well as the commencement of a franchise business, the number of rooms has more than doubled, thanks to the connected hotels.

The first ATLANTIC Hotel was opened outside of the Bremen borders in the spring of 2010. The new ATLANTIC Hotel Lübeck has a central location in the heart of the historic town of Lübeck, which is surrounded by water and has about 1,800 listed buildings of historical interest, winding alleyways and passageways. From here, you can reach all touristic highlights on foot, such as St. Mary’s church, the market square with city hall, Holsten Gate or “Heiligen-Geist” Hospital. With its 135 double rooms, studios and suites, the restaurant and bar, the hotel offers a “home away from home” for business travellers and Lübeck visitors. Conferences and events for up to 250 persons can be hosted in the modern conference area and here, for instance, parties can be celebrated in the roof lounge or in the wine cellar.

In the summer of 2010, ATLANTIC Hotels returned to the Federal State of Bremen. Our new 4-star Superior ATLANTIC Grand Hotel Bremen is situated in a prominent location in the old town. Touristic attractions of cultural significance such as Bremen’s marketplace, Bremen City Hall and the Roland statue (UNESCO world heritage site), as well as the historic Böttcherstraße, the popular Schlachte promenade along the River Weser and the exclusive shopping possibilities are all located in the direct neighbourhood. 138 double rooms and suites offer our guests the ideal domicile for their stay in Bremen. The roof lounge and the wine cellar ensure an exclusive ambience for your festivities.

Also in the summer of 2010, and just in time for Kieler Woche, the second ATLANTIC Hotel was opened in the far north of Germany. In direct proximity to the central station and with a view across Kiel Fjord and the ferry terminal, the design-oriented 4-star superior ATLANTIC Hotel Kiel, which is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, sets new standards. It has 187 spacious rooms with modern furnishing, including 12 suites. PIER 16 restaurant serves creative and cosmopolitan dishes. A special ambience is offered by the roof lounge bar, with a circumferential terrace and panoramic view across Kiel and the Kiel Fjord. The hotel-own, spaciously-dimensioned sauna and fitness area rounds off the offer.

Already in January 2010, with ATLANTIC Congress Hotel Essen, the hotel group’s first franchise operation was started. The 4-star superior hotel, which is operated by Zech Hotels GmbH, is located in direct proximity to the Grugahalle and has 248 modern and design-oriented deluxe rooms and suites as well as in-house conference capacities for up to 730 persons. The offer is supplemented by the cooperation with Grugahalle and the Congress Center Essen.

Thereby, the first projects were realised outside of the Federal State of Bremen and the ATLANTIC Hotels brand was developed further.
