THW Kiel

Experience the best handball team in Germany in the Wunderino Arena, merely a few minutes by foot from ATLANTIC Hotel Kiel!

The list of titles THW Kiel has already won in its history is long: no other handball club in Germany is more successful than the sporting flagship of the state capital. In Kiel, people talk about THW; in Kiel, handball is a part of the city’s culture; in Kiel one celebrates with the “Zebras” – the handball stars that have also made the city of Kiel internationally famous.

When THW Kiel, record champion and three-time Champions League winner plays, the fans rush to the city centre. There, the heart of handball beats on a small hill. Every Bundesliga home game has been sold out for more than three decades, and season tickets are passed on from one generation to the next. 10,285 fans heat up every league game in the witches’ cauldron in the narrow arena. Games in the “handball cathedral”, as the Sparkassen-Arena is reverently called in Europe, which was formerly known as the Baltic Sea hall, are a true experience. The atmosphere of the Sparkassen-Arena, which was built more than 60 years ago from the structure of a Sylt airport hangar, and which is in direct proximity to ATLANTIC Hotel Kiel, is legendary – here handball has been at home for decades; here the state capital lives out its black-white cult.

Under the guidance of trainer Alfred Gislason, who has led the fortunes of the Kiel players since 2008, the “Zebras” - with two Champions League successes and the probably unique, perfect 68:0 triple season - in which, apart from the cup and the Champions League, they won the championship without losing a single point, ensured an entry in the history books. However, despite the 38 national and seven international titles to date, the Kiel fjord players still haven’t had enough: come and experience in person how THW Kiel continues to work on adding future title chapters to the THW success story, with the German national players Steffen Weinhold and Patrick Wiencek, or the Danish duo of Niklas Landin / Rene Toft Hansen, as well as the young, hungry talents!
