Bremen im Herbst und Winter Bremen in Fall and Winter Here, you are transported to Paris, circa 1900, where the young, still un- married artist Paula Becker met the painter Emil Hansen, later known as Nolde. Letters, some of which have never been published, reveal that the two felt something more than just a general interest in each other. They also shared many parallel biograph- ical and artistic experiences, which can be seen in direct proximity for the first time in the Museen Böttcher- straße. Seventy works in all are shown in the exhibition entitled “Emil Nolde meets Paula Modersohn- Becker”, whichwill open its doors on 9th October. The focus is on man: A motif that fascinated both these major artists throughout their creative lives. The art tour takes on a more sporting note as you move on to the Kunsthal- le Bremen, located almost half a mile away. On 22nd October, an exhibition will open here called “Max Lieber- mann. From leisure to contemporary sport.” This important impressionist was the first German painter to take an intensive look at this subject. At the end of the 19th century, he pain- ted bathers and riders by the North Sea, and later turned to modern sports such as tennis, polo and horse racing. Liebermann took inspiration from French paintings as reflected in works by Degas, Manet and Toulouse-Lautrec. The unique nature of his sports motifs invites a clear comparison with contemporaries such as John Lavery and Max Slevogt. After the First World War, during the 1920s, other, younger artists turned to the theme of sports, discovering as their motifs popular mass-appeal games such as football or boxing. The boxer paintings by Georges Grosz, Renée Sintenis and Rudolf Grossmann reflect this historical shift away from elite turf sports in the open air and towards the sweaty physical power that dominated urban sports halls. After taking in sport as art, you can enjoy a gentle stroll back to the ATLANTIC Grand Hotel. 22.10.2016–26.02.2017 „Max Liebermann.
