ATLANTIC Grand Hotel Bremen

Was hätte Picasso bloß ohne seine Frauen gemacht? Vermutlich keine Kunst. Jede seiner zahlreichen Ehefrauen und Geliebten war auch Muse und Modell. Nur eine hat er wie besessen porträtiert, aber nie er- obern können: Sylvette David, das Mädchen mit dem Pferdeschwanz. Mit ihr entstand 1954 die berühm- te Sylvette-Serie, die noch bis zum 22. Juni in der Kunsthalle Bremen zu sehen ist (siehe Seite 6/7). Zur Ausstellungseröffnung am 22. Februar kam das letzte noch lebende Modell Picassos höchstpersön- lich. Eingecheckt hat die 79-Jährige im ATLANTIC Grand Hotel – unter ihrem heutigen Namen Lydia Corbett. Dankbar und mit Tränen in den Augen ging sie durch die Ausstellung. Seit 60 Jahren hatte sie die Porträts nicht mehr gesehen. Zwei davon hatte Picasso ihr zwar geschenkt, doch die hatte sie schon bald verkaufen müssen, um ihren kranken Ehemann zu versorgen. Man fragt sich, was die Bilder heute wohl wert sind! Damals erkannte Picasso in Sylvette einen neuen Frauentyp: erotisch und selbstbewusst zugleich. Durch ihre Zusammenarbeit in Südfrankreich wurde das Modell in den 1950er-Jahren fast ebenso verehrt wie der Meister selbst. Viele junge Frauen wollten so aussehen wie Sylvette – allen voran Brigitte Bardot. Doch deren Bitte, sie ebenfalls zu porträtieren, lehnte Picasso strikt ab. Sylvette selbst war eher schüchtern. Ein Filmangebot von Jacques Tati lehnte sie ab. Als Lydia Corbett malt sie seit 1980 auch selbst – und be- stätigt, was Picasso ihr einst gesagt hatte: „Die Kunst bringt so viel Glück.“ What would Picasso have done without his women? For one thing, it is unlikely that he would have produced such great art, as each one of his many wives and lovers also served as a muse and model. Yet there was one muse whom he painted obsessively, but could never seduce: Sylvette David, the girl with the ponytail. She was the inspiration behind the famous Sylvette series, which was created in 1954 and is now on display at the Kunsthalle Bremen until 22 June (see page 6/7). Picasso’s last surviving model made a personal appearance at the exhibition opening on 22 February. Earlier that day, the 79-year- old checked into the ATLANTIC Grand Hotel under her current name, Lydia Corbett. With tears in her eyes, she felt a deep sense of appreciation as she walked through the exhibition. She hadn’t seen the portraits in 60 years. Although Picasso had given two of them to her as a gift, she had been forced to sell them soon afterwards in order to care for her sick husband. One can’t help wondering how much those paintings would be worth today! For Picasso, Sylvette represented a new type of erotic, self-confident woman. Their collaboration in the south of France led to the model becoming almost as revered as the master himself in the 1950s. Many young women, most notably, Brigitte Bardot, wanted to look like Sylvette. Indeed, Bardot asked Picasso to paint her por- trait, but Picasso flatly refused. In contrast to Bardot, Sylvette was a shy woman, turning down an offer from the famous director Jacques Tati to star in one of his films.
