The ATLANTIC Hotels cooperation initially began in 1990 in the Bremen district of Vegesack. This is where two investors, Joachim J. Linnemann and Kurt Zech, erected a business centre also integrating a hotel. Opened in 1992, the ATLANTIC Hotel Vegesack offers 86 rooms, a breakfast restaurant with a terrace plus 4 seminar rooms for up to 60 persons and is operated as an hotel garni. Another restaurant is located in the building.
With the successful development of this hotel in Vegesack, a decision was made to open another hotel in 1996 directly opposite Bremen airport. The ATLANTIC Hotel Airport is integrated in the Airport Center and has 112 rooms. The hotel was also initially operated as an hotel garni, but was later extended by congress facilities for up to 250 persons and the BLIXX restaurant on the 8th floor with a panorama of the airport apron and of the Bremen city centre.
For the Expo project UNIversum (Expo 2000 in Hanover), the UNIVERSUM complex of buildings was erected directly on the edge of the Bremen City Woods on the campus of Bremen University. The concept of the ensemble, comprising Science Center, Conference Center and Hotel, closely connects all of these in order to offer overnight stays, congresses and accompanying programmes only short distances apart. The second of many secrets behind the success of ATLANTIC Hotel Universum is the location directly on the edge of the technology park. With its 150 double rooms and studios in design-oriented ambience, the CAMPUS restaurant and event capacities—in some cases suitable for vehicles—for up to 500 persons, the hotel has added another facet to the Bremen hotel landscape: relaxing in rooms with clear contours and straight lines plus functional design.
By establishing a central accounting system and introducing the hotel administration software from the market leader Micros-Fidelio, and with the ATLANTIC Hotel Universum, the basis was also formed for the ATLANTIC Hotel cooperation. In addition to this, the design of the hotel, which won the Contract World Award and a red dot award, also serves as the basis for the interior design of subsequent hotels.
In 2005, the ATLANTIC Hotel an der Galopprennbahn in the Bremen district of Vahr opened its doors. This hotel has 121 double rooms, studios and suites, the DERBY restaurant, with the direct connection to the racecourse grandstand, is able to offer events for up to 1,000 participants on one level. The design concept of the ATLANTIC Hotel Universum was refined and also applied to this hotel on the racecourse. The ideal of congress, accommodation and social programme all over one area is also lived out at the racecourse.
Central Services in the ATLANTIC Hotel cooperation was also extended by the introduction of central personnel accounting and new software (OPERA Multi-Property from Micros-Fidelio).
At the beginning of 2008, the high-impact ATLANTIC Hotel SAIL City was opened in Bremerhaven as the latest member of the fledgling cooperation. The architecture of the building resembles a sail full of wind and ideally reflects the location directly on the dyke of the River Weser. The interior design—again a refinement of the concept for the two existing design-oriented hotels—picks up the theme. The 120 rooms on the eight floors of the 19-storey building open up a view over the outer Weser that cannot be obstructed. Topping off all this is the Captain’s Lounge on the 19th floor with a panorama of the outer Weser as far as the North Sea and of Bremerhaven. A viewing platform 86 m in height and the Conference Center Bremerhaven with a total capacity of up to 500 participants and directly connected to the hotel round off the unique offerings in Bremerhaven.
The year 2010 ushered a quantum leap in the further development of ATLANTIC Hotels. With a total of 3 new hotel openings in the first six months and a franchise operation, the number of rooms in the hotel cooperation more than doubled.
In spring 2010, the first ATLANTIC Hotel outside Bremen's city boundaries was opened. The new ATLANTIC Hotel Lübeck is located in the centre of the historic water-enclosed old part of Lübeck with its 1,800 listed buildings, narrow winding streets and alleyways. All the sights, like the St Maria Church, the marketplace with the town hall, the Holstentor Gate or the Holy Ghost Hospital can be reached on foot. The hotel with its 135 double rooms, studios and suites, restaurant and bar offer the ideal home from home for business travellers and visitors to Lübeck. Congresses and events for up to 250 persons can be held in the modern conference centre and functions can be celebrated, for instance in the Roof Lounge or wine cellar.
In summer 2010, the ATLANTIC Hotels returned to the state of Bremen with the new 4-star superior ATLANTIC Grand Hotel Bremen being opened in the heart of the old part of town. Culturally important sights are located in the direct vicinity, such as Bremen's market square with its Town Hall and Roland statue (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the historic Böttcherstraße, the popular Schlachte promenade along the Weser, and with exclusive stores for shopping nearby. The hotel offers it´s guests 138 double rooms and suites as an ideal home from home in Bremen. The penthouse Roof Lounge and the wine cellar provide an exclusive backdrop for your celebrations.
In good time for the Kieler Woche regatta, the second ATLANTIC Hotel in the far north also opened its doors in summer 2010. Situated close to the main railway station and the ferry terminals and with a view over the Kiel Fjord, the 4-star ATLANTIC Hotel Kiel sets new standards in design and is fitted out with the latest technical facilities. It has 187 spacious rooms, including 12 suites, all furnished in a modern style. The restaurant serves a creative and cosmopolitan cuisine. The Roof Lounge Bar surrounded by a terrace greets guests with a special ambience and a panoramic view over Kiel and the Kiel Fjord. The hotel's own saunascape and fitness facilities add the finishing touch.
The first franchise operation in the hotel cooperation was launched in January 2010 with the ATLANTIC Congress Hotel Essen. The 4-star superior hotel managed by Zech Hotels GmbH is located in the direct vicinity of the Grugahalle and has 248 modern and design-oriented deluxe rooms and suites plus an in-house congress capacity for up to 730 persons. The hotel also works in cooperation with the Grugahalle and Essen Congress Center.
Thus the implementation of the first projects outside the federal state of Bremen were initiated and were able to contribute to strengthening the ATLANTIC Hotels brand still further.
